ATHLETICS.

SPORTS AT THE BASIN RESERVE. The summer sports meeting promoted by tho Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, was held on Saturday afternoon at tho Basin Reserve. The weather was perfect, and the attendance of the public oxcecded 1500. Excelent sport was witnessed, almost all the events being well contested, though two or three items on the programme had to bo omitted owing to shortage of entries or other causes. Tho participation of H. Henderson and E. Fisher (Now Zealand Amateur Champions) in the 100 yds. and 220 yds. races was looked forward to with much interest, but Fishor was hors do combat with a sprained ankle, and tho handicapping was apparently too severe against Henderson as scratch man to allow of his getting a place. In the Three-Mile Flat Handicap F. Wilton, the Harriers' Champion, covered tho distance in 16 minutes 23 seconds. Harry Kerr, who had como down fromTaranaki on purpose to take part in tho walking ovonts, was 1 tho most popular competitor of tho whole meeting. He won the ThreeMile Walk from the scratch in 22 minutes 20 seconds, and was third in tho One-Mile Walk, though heavily handicapped. In the polo jumping event, L. M'Kay (New Zealand Amateur Champion) negotiated 10ft. lih.. very neatly, the winner, N. Moult, (with' a handicap allowance of. 3ft. Gin.), jumping Bft. 2in. Tho bamboo pole, which the Centre imported' from Japan, was appreciated by tho competitors. It is understood that Mr. W. Coffey, ■ the local officer of the Centro, intends to report tho running of some of tho competitors in the sprint cents as being unsatisfactory. Afternoon tea and band music contributed to'tho pleasures of the afternoon. The officials worked , well, and put the programme through without a hitch.' Following aro results':— 100 yd.
