TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.
The -weekly meeting of the Trades and ■ Labour .Council was- held in' the Trades Hall last, bight. There was a large attendance of delegates, Mr. Parlane presiding. Mr. .1. A. M'Cullough,' recently 'appointed •••• workers''.representative on the' ArbitrationCourt, ,was .fdrlnally - wekomeid..' ' Addressing •' the meeting,''. Mr. M'CulloUgh' thanked the Wei- . lington indu^rial-unions for 1 their support, • and took it as 'a complimeut that the.unions - liad beeji undivided -on the question. Ho : asked delegates of the vArifmS unioiis to" make knbVvn their iiidividua Irequiromertts so that - he might get into closer touch with the needs and conditions of the ttorkehS. ' Mr. Long,, ofvthe Auckland Trades and Lalj6ur.Couiic.il, aiid Mr. lvellet, delegate from the. Ota go Council, were present; and received the cortplirficnts of the local Council. „ A long discussion ensued over'the-laxity .of the Labour Department witli regard to the ad- ; ministration of the.Shops and Offices ...Act, and the various awards. - Special reference was; ■' made. to breaches of the Act ■ which ; were = alleged to have • been committed by master •/' iiutehors .in the country, and hotelkeepers in Wellington. and also to the fact that, tho Do- • partmont, bad not taken decisive .steps .to. enforce upon employers the sanitary clauses of . the different' building traded aiyiirds. The I'bllowing resolution,was carried unani- ' ?■' mously(1) That the secretary write to the Minister for, Labour drawing attftntioii to the laxity of the, Department; and : (2) that the Parliamentary. Committee of the. Conricil be authorised to draw,,.up a more definite-stated , incnt of the facts. referred to. ~. , • ... .The Council, by resolution, r^nveyed'to Mr. W. A. Hawkins, of the Suprotnfe Court, its appreciation of tho courtesy and' assistance rendered by .him to tho various ' Union repfosoiltatives- of Wellington, and con- " gratulating hint on his appointment as Regis- i trar of the Supreme.
