A PICTURE SHOW.

'Mr..'James Scott, who was for some time connected. with the art department of. tho Wellington 'Technical School, has. a show of oil paintings at M'Gregor Wright's studio at present. The most pretentious of' these is a full-length, life-size portrait of. His Worship the Mayor (Hon. T. W. Hislop), in. his robes of'office. There is absolute fidelity in the portraj'al' of the robes and regalia, but there is something in the face—a peculiar look in the eyes perhaps—that 'is not exactly Mr. Hislop. There are throe large portraits of ladies amongst the collection, two of which"arc rather too stiff and stary-oyed, and the flesh-tints hardly suggest what iA oyidontly intended—tho warmth of life is missing. . The third—a young lady in a red jacket—is much better; it has the merit of being admirably composed. Tho best figure portrait is that of a girl of Brittany— simple and natural pose, and the composition distinctly commendable; altogether an 'admirable piece of work. That Mr.'Scott can do good work is proved in a little brown twilight scene called Mendon, into, which the artist has engrained the feeling of quiet evening in a pleasant-woodland- place. A large canvas representing • cattle and \ a haystack falls sliort of the intention. The cattle aro fairly well done, but the haystack has surely been plastered. This, with several other pictures exhibited, seems to be an unfinished study, for the detail is missing without getting a good general effect by other means.
