CARRYING TRADE OF THE EAST.
■_ « JAPANESE MARITIME SUCCESS. 1 DT TELEGRAPH—rRESS ASSOCIATION—COPtttIOnT, London, December 16. The "Timos 1 " Tokio correspondent says that the success of Japanese steamers trading to Bombay is wholly duo to their contracting with Japaneso spinning companies for tho transport of raw cotton at choap rates, and also for rogular supplies. At a meeting of the P. and O. Company on December 11. the Chairman (Sir Thos. Sutherland) admitted that Japan had captured the carrying trade between Japan and Bombay. The'abovc cablegram supplies the reason. The -growth' of Japanese cotton manufactures, which used 925.0(10 bales in IDOG-7, as compared .with 632,700 bales in 1903-4, has caused a bigger importation of raw cotton from India, and Japaneso shipowners have evidently been able to supply their own manufacturers on bettor terms t.haii outsiders. The cotton trade secures tlicm a back freight, and tho mercantile marine of .Japan is not likely to spare any effort to get hold of the carrying trade of tho East.
