ON GUARD.
AN UNCOMFORTABLE SUGGESTION. The • burning of the Parliamentary Buildings lias created a feeling of uneasinoss in. rogard to some of the other large structures .belonging to the Government. Jjaturally, the Departmental Buildings 'on Lambton Quay are the subject of most anxiety. It was stated on good authority that all tho finger-print records collected for tho'Polico Department woro at one timo kept, without any spdeial precautions against lire, in the top story of the big wooden building. It is not known wliethor they are there still, or whether they have been removed to a sofor place. ' The fearsome idea has bevan mooted that some oriminal at largo might, for tho purpose of destroying the proofs of his own identity, sot liro to tho building. In such a way a much more terrible conflagration than that of Wednesday morning might bo started.-
It is rumoured that one of tho Ministers has received an anonymous letter containing the information that the Government Buildings are to bo burned down. Yesterday, tho unusual sight was witnossed of a permanent Artilleryman pacing up and : down tho grounds in front of the buildings; and last evening two bell-tont-s wero noticed at tho rear grounds in the sholter of somo trees. The corridors of tho building wero all lit throughout the night. Thoso facts undoubtedly seem to indicate uneasiness as to tho safety of the buildings. j
