The scarcity of labourers of the right' kind experienced by New Zealand farmers is, perhaps,' merely a local edition of tho depopulation of - country districts which has Ijeon taking, place in Britain; An investigation made ,by tho British Board, of Agricut' . ture resulted'in the conclusion'that population^,was duo to the following' cause's: The grassinc'of arable land, the use of ''improved machinery, the higher wages and superior social advantages obtainable in towns, deficiency of housing accommodation, lack of opportunities for financial advance-!, ment, lack of small holdings, ' and lack of money on tho'part of those' wliq would tako up small holdings. Hope for the future is derived 'from tho fact that farmers are adapting themselves to changed conditions by taking up tbo cultivation of fruit and vegetables, poultry, and other industries bf a so-called subsidiary character.
