OUR MODE OF INSPECTION.
THE FORMER SCARE. Mr. Kirk, Government Biologist, when seen by si representative of tho " Heraid.", stated (says our Auckland correspondent) that there was a strict supervision exercised on all fruit coming into tho Dominion. All fruit must enter cither by Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, or the Bluff, and no fruit or plants could bo removed t from any landing place in tho Dominion without, the owner having first obtained a certificato from tho' inspector. The examination of fruit was very strict, as the damage caused by the fly was very much more serious than that caused by the codlin moth. If the fruit ily maggot was found in one case,'the whole of the cases under the samo marie .were burned. , " It got into some of the small gardens at Napier and Blenheim last year/ 5 added Mr. Kirk, " hut very energetic steps wero taken to control it, and, the Department hopes successfully, but we cannot be absolutely certain'until tho next season is over. The estont of the inspection work may be judged from the fact that sometimes as many as 25,000 cases of fruit arrive by a siuglo boat. In addition, tho passengers luggage is also investigated for infected fruit. The safety of the fruit industry in New Zealand dopends entirely on tho port inspection.
