WELLINGTON HIGHLAND RIFLES.

— ♦ , PRESENTATION TO MAJOR C. D. M'INTOSH. ' Tbo Wollington Highlanders mustered in force at Mawson's, Cuba Street, last night, the occasion being a complimentary smoko concert tendered by the members and exmorn bers of tlio corps to their old captain, now Major; -M'lntosh] on tbo Staff of the Wellington Rifle Battalion. Major W. G. Duthio, officer commanding the battalion, Captains Mabin, Turner, Cowles, and M'Diarmid, Chaplain-Major W. Shirer, and Staff Sergeant-Major Colclough wero in attendance. The loyal toast having been honoured, the chairman, Captain M'Diarmid, commanding the Highland Rifles, proposed the health of " Our Guest." Referring to Major M'lntosh's connection with the Volunteers, the spoakcr said that, when the corps was established in 1900, their guest was its first captain. His subalterns then were Mr. J. M'Lean and Professor M'Kenzio. For seven years their old captain had presided over tho dostinies of tbo company. Spealting from thrco years' intimate association with Major M'lntosh, Captain M'Diarmid paid a high tribute to tho interest and oiiorgy displayed by their old commanding officer 111 tho management of tho company's affairs. ILis policy with tho' men had beon " Come on, not "Go on." Their gnost had served in tho Fourteenth Regiment of tho Imperial Army in tho Maori wars. On bohalf of the members and ox-members of tbo corps, tho speaker then presonted to Major M'lntosh a valuable pair of prismatic field glasses, a handsomely mounted photograph of tho Highland Rifles as they appeared at a recent church paradu, with a mustor of 62, and an ongrossed design, mounted, tho work of Corporal Grant, of tho corps. Replying to the toast of his health, Major M'lntosh referred to tho difficulties they had had to contend with in tho establishment of the corps. Ho had hold his first commission in tbo Guards. For his association with the Highlanders he would cherish tlio highest regard. Other toasts worn "Tho Ex-Members," "The Wellington Rillc Battalion," and "The Press." Highland dances and songs filled in tbo remainder of tho evening.
