Mrs. Wharton, of Massachusetts, author of "The Houso of Mull," has a homo in tho midst of 150 acres, with a winding drivo along tho borders of.a forest. It is in tho seventeenth century style copied from Lord Brownlow's Lincolnshire home, Helton, with its whito stucco facade. The entrance vestibule boasts of fino Italian furniture; thero are finely-painted panels on tho upper tandins, and a long gallery from this panelled in white marhle. It boasts of fino console tables, marblo columns, and vases. The largo drawing-room is in tho sarao seventeenth century style painted in bluish-grey. Flemish tapestries adorn tho walls, the furniture chieily eighteenth century Italian. The dining-roitm is panelled in white, with carving after Grinling Gibbon. Oak bookshelves fill tlie library, which abounds in statuary and books. Tho bedrooms are filled with fumitnro in tho French .-.ml Italian style. 1 Mrs. Humphrey Ward's Buckinghamshire homo was onco tho residence of the poet Waller, and there is a huge tree in tho garden called tho poot's seat. Sir Walter Scott used to bo a frequent visitor here, and is said to havo taken the title- of Ivanhoo from tho adjacent villago of Ivinghoe. Tho Manor Houso has spacious rooms filled ivitli lino pictures and quaint furniture, the gardens aro very brilliant, and Mrs. Ward's study commands a fino view, and here moat of her books have beott written- .
