LUCK OF THE SHOW.
The hand that deals out tho awards at an agricultural show is generally supposed tq bevfickle' in its movements. A prominent judge, however, says ; that many farmers, on the plea that they are helping tho show, oritcr scores -of animals that ought never to be'seen on a: show ground. Theso .animals swoll the numbers, but, in his opinion, damage the-show as a medium of instruction. The-inferior* animal has this redeeming feature; that he sometimes indicates a spirit of' improvement and competition among 1 the rank-and-filo farmers as distinct from tho stud :breeders'. Wo have heard of eases- of mo'n entering a hundred animals and porhaps only getting- one second prize. ' Others, on tho contrary—stud men, of course—will enter a dozen animals and wipe! tho boards in a whole section. Tho awards at a show aro-. not "H governed by luck. Mr'. S. R. Lancaster is ono of tho men who' get much out of little. Ho had 41 sheep at -tho Hawera show, and they won him £40.
