BOXING.

(By Merodiu'.) Dr. Napior-Jl'Lean's decision in tho. God-frey-Hanky bout does not appear to have given universal satisfaction. There is always a section, and a large one, of a "light" audience that allows itself to bo carried away by deductions gleaned from tho concluding rounds of a contest to tho'oxclusion of any impressions formed at tho beginning of the trouble, and it is generally this faction that raises its'" united voico in protest if th.Q ..decision given does, not.coincido with its l particular' opinion; : Tho fact that Hanley-was' going strongest at the finish, and belief "that ho would havo'disposed of hisi man in another round or so, havo no bearing on tho caso at all. What does count is that, taking a lino through tho whole affair, Godfrey did most of the attacking ; that up to tho tonth round his timing and, footwork wore superior to his opponent's; and that he. showed considerably less inclination .to 'clinch "throughout. That ho was ■ ihoro.: marked avuk distressed at flio end-was the/penalty'ho paid for his superior aggressiveness,:, and' that; these points should couiit foihis; discr^it'must seem absurd to any Vfalf-inihded judge; : It . is" this facility of takiiig : aj fair all through a ; . contost,'and. of declining-to ho. affected;- to the prejudice of cither , of the contestants' 1 by'any; one or ' mpro outstanding features thereof, th|it makes a capable rofcrco, and of this faculty. fir. M'Lean is possessed to a vory largo degree;,- .. : : Hanloy loft by tho Mahono yesterday, and oxprcssod himself a.s very satisfied with th'e'i treatment accorded him by' tho Boxing Association, though ho feels rather soro at' not getting tho verdict on Monday night." The following from n.n Australian exchange will provo of interest to those who romoiuber Queensland V tawny-lieaded, " niiddloweight representative in tho Australasian Championships held in the Oncrii Houso this soason:—"Tho contest for the amateur middle-woight' boxing i championship . , of Queensland,. between A.. J., Scanlan .(Brisbane) and K. B. Camoron. (Toowoombii)i took placo last oveniiig, and was a disappointing affair. . . ... The ..contest . - was -.over quickly.'..When the,second-round was,called Camoron was in tho chair insehsiblo. Scanlan floored Cameron ,-with- a' loft hook to tho , tomplo. ' Camcroii was badly" shaken but rose, only to meet a right swing on tho

chin... Ho wont down and 1 rose again'. Scanlan■ repeated tho .stroke with .disastrous effect. • It was fully teii minutes before Cainoron camo to." From which it would appear that our lato visitor's tigerish appearance in tho ring doos not bolio him. ■

C. Griffin, tho Jtew Ze-iilander who has been building up a good record as a fighter of the whirlwind order in Australia, is making a decisivo stop in his career, by going to try his luck in England. He has been fnrtunato enough to secure a match ■at tho National Sporting Club for £300 a sido with the'promiso of future matches if ho makes a good showing. Ho is to meet either "Spike" , Robson ■ or J. .Driscoll. Griffin is making tho trip at his own expense. ',He was the recipient of many good wishes for his success at a sent-pff given; him in Wren's Athletic Pavilion on Monday,' November IS.-

Tho inaugural championship contests of, the newly-formed Marlborough -Boxing Association took place last Saturday and Monday. The first night was dovoted to , heats, rofereed. by Mr. Geo. Bush, and exchanges show that, though tho attendance was not up to expectations, good sport was- provided, all tho contestants making up in spirit for rrhat they lacked in science. On the second

night the finals, and a big attraction in the shape of a contest between Baird,-of Nelson,Bst. and-Steel, Bst. 101b., for a-purse-of £50;-:(£4o ,to the winner and '£5 ns : -the loser's .-end) : completely filled the house.• ■ r

Tim Tracy controlled the bout, which ended in favour of the Nelson rpspesentative, who floored his man thr«e times in tlio fourth round, the third time for keeps. The business of tho evening closed with an exhibition spar between Tracy and Hurcombo, which is summed up in tho Marlborough "Express" as "a very scientific'exhibition, tho head and foot work —in fact, overy department'of the science—being excellent and an object lesson, to beginners." ;
