The Hon; J. A. Minister for Labour and. Marine, will go south next week. Mr. John Dutliie, sen., who is at present on a tour abroad; left Hong-Kong yesterday, en route for New Zealand. ' It .is rumoured that Mr. R. Carter, Collector of Customs at Christchurch, will succeed, Mr. D. Johnston, Collector of, Customs at,.Wellington, who is..to.,retire, at the end of.;the .year. ~ Mr. V. It. Meredith, landing waiter in the Customs Department, who is leaving the Government service to practice law, was the recipient of. a presentation yesterday from the local Customs staff. Tho Revs. P. W. Fairclough, C. Porter, and. E..P. Blamires, who have been attending tho Methodist District Synod at Napier, returned to Wellington yesterday. The Rev. J. Williams, of Newtown, is exchanging pulpits for to-morrow with tho Rev. A. C. Lawry, of Napier. In view of the ei>rly ■retirement on a pension of • Mr. John . Coom, Chief Engineer, Maintenance Branch," Now Zealand Government 1 Railways, his brother officers have decided to present him-with his portrait in oils, and Mr'. Sydney L. Thompson, of Christchurch, has been entrusted with the commission. Mr.. Cyril Towsey, the clever. Wellington pianist, who went to London some timo ago, is evidently meeting with some success. On October 22 last ho was, advertised in the London "Daily Telegraph" as the pianist at a big concert that was being given at the Aoliari Hall under the patronage of Princess Christian and other notabilities in aid of the National Society, of Day Nurseries. Another New Zoalander, in the person of. Miss Irene Ainsley, the Auckland contralto, was included in tho programme. Mr. Towsey was also pianist to Haidco Voorzanger, who gave a violin recital at Bechstein Hall, London, on .October 30.
Tlib Anglican Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Wallis) will leave Wellington to-day on a fortnight's tour of the diocese, during which he will hold confirmation services as follow December 1, Wanganui College School; 3rd, Stan way; 4th, Feilding; sth, Marton; 6th; VWaitotara; Bth, Eltham; 10th,"Eketahuna. On his roturn to Wellington tho Bishop will hold confirmation services at Wadestown on December 12th, Petorie on tho 15th, and St. Paul's, Wellington, on the 15th. Tho Rev. J.R. Cassell will bo licensed by the Bishop at-Hawera on Monday nest, and' the Rev. J: F. Mayo at Kiwitea on *? 7 «dnesday.
