A PICTURE SHOW.

Mr. E. W. Christmas has a collection of scenic canvases on view at ' present in M'Gregor Wright's studio on .Lambtpn Quay that we ■ well worth inspection.' This artist is capable of doing good work, but a glance at his work shows' a certain unevenness in quality that to. some extent is redeemed , in a number of instances. Ho is more successful at depicting Australian scenes incatching the veal character of the essentials that make up the scenic individuality of this country, and among his larger paintings none are better than, a couple of quiet eveum°- river scenes, with that peculiar suggestion of soft smokiness. that is so attractive. "Reflections" (53) is the.better of the two and shows the talent ot the artist in still . water effects. Among the sixty-one oil painUings one picks out -'Morning, Manapoun. (10) a gem in evening. purples. bunny Hours " 7s the sunlit figure of a girl descend, ing the Nghauranga t>orge road, . but a much better effect of the same locality is found in ••Sunny flours ' (21), "Evening ' (No. 44). " The Mountain 1 lock, Glencoe " (46)' is nicely composed, and is effective in the distance conveyed by a corner bill ever so far away. "Kbb Tide,. Manly," is a seashore, in pretty opaline tints so .often seen after a hot day' along the New South- Wales coast There is clarity in the near water and life in. the seagull flock that Butter 'twist wave and weed. "Wellington Harbour from Oriental Bay," is among the best of the small pictures, in several 6f which fcho, artist, excels himself, borne of Mr. Christinas's ' sunlight effects, though, pretty, are almost Moroccan in temperament, and hardly fit New Zealand, but he has succeeded in arranging a very creditable lot of paintings, which lie should have no difficulty in disposing of. There are three of Haite's exquisite paintings at present oh view in the same studio, of-which "Hampton Court" is a tiling, of >great beauty. There are also specimens of tne work of Borough Johnson, R.8.A., the late-Edwin Hayes, R. 1,, T. Bacon, E. Gonldsmith, R.8.A., the late Jas. M."Nairn,; and Signor Dattilo Rubbo to add an additional interest to the show.
