A SERIOUS CHARGE.
*-— ALLEGED ROBBERY FROM A DEAF MUTE. The Stipendiary Magistrate (Mr. Riddoll) will t'o-dny hoar n case against Archibald M'Nab, involving a charge of theft of £115 ', from a deaf mute, named David Sutherland, 1 un Mny 27 last. It will bo remembered by thoso who follow up sucn .matters that Sutherland disappeared from his lodgings on , that dato, and threo weeks later (on Juno > 18) his body was found in the harbour. It ' was known that ho had a sum of about £115 ' on his person when ho disappeared, it hav- ' ing oomo to tho knowledge of the police that ' such a sum was withdrawn from the bank !. by the deceased on that dato. On being searched, only ono penny was found in de- '. ceasnd s pocket, and, though search has been . inailo by the police, nothing had been discovered'to indicate what had become, of tho ) money. A post mortem e>:amjn.atjan was 3 mtuic, and at a subsequent inquiry into the - caus'o of death, tho jury returned a verdict 3 of " Found drowned near the Glasgow Wharf, 2 Wellington, but thorn is no evidence to show " ho> deceased got into the harbour." As tho result of inquiries mado by the * police, tho accused, who had been working on ~ a Wairarapa station up till November 16, was arrested by Detective Cassels on Thursday of last week whon about to ship to Lon- (] don as a firoman. J Sutherland, a single man, was a cabinetmaker by trade, and belonged to Dunedin.
