THE NEW PLYMOUTH SHOW.

SI'OILED BY HEAVY RAIN. TO-DAY'S EVENTS. (BY TELEGRiPIi—SrECIAt, ' CORRESrOKDENT.) New Plymouth, November 28. The Now Plymouth Show to-day was wrecked-by rain. Tho downpour began at about eight o'clock in the morning, and continued till after three. A few of tho early trains from distant parts of the district left with large freights of visitors, but thore was rcry little effort made by-anybody from the'neighbourhood to see the show. Probably the rain has cost tho Society something over a hundred pounds, which is a serious matter to a ■ society that is just getting upon its feet. Most "people who found themselves on the show-ground horded together in the secretent, or in the sido shows and other places that afforded some slight shelter. The ground at the gateways became a quagmire, and ' crossing was" effected by ■ the aid rf hurdles laid down. Meanwhile the riding and driving contests were, -struggled through with imminent danger of spills owing to the slipperincss; and some people, with great coats.and umbrellas Watched, the proceedings, with", efforts at enthusiasm. It .was a miserable ordeal. Men and ladies sat in sodden saddles, drenched some of them, to the skin, and with hair, in the case of the ladies, draggling down- their necks. The judges looked still more wretched. Whort after 3 o'clock it. became possible to examine the' merits of the jumpiiig, .it. was. .realised that this part of the show was remarkably gUOd. ' „ ... tt , . In to-day's judging Mr. 0. W. Hoskins won the special prize for jihc.best Shorthorn dairy bull in the show. , Earlier in tho day a sale of pedigree cattle was held on tho show ground by Mr. Newton King and Mr. Griffiths, and attracted ■', considerable interest. .This sale is an annual event at: the New Plymouth show, and accounts- in some measure .for the large entry of Jerseys. The gloomy weather, however, spoilt, the--market, and the prices realised wore considerably .lower than was anticipated. Mr. F. Towler's famous champion Jersey bull, Pride , of Beaconsfield, was passed in at 55 guineas, with a number of others. Tho following aro. prices and buyers of other Jerseys sold:—Griffiths and. Cornwall's, bull,' "Wild Cherry, champion at Haw.era, and Wanganili, bought by Mr. Charles Clarke, New Plymouth, for 32 guineas;" Griffiths and- Cornwall's yearling .bull, Frisco, first at Wanganui, 'second at Hawora,-. bought by Kirton Bros., Feilding, : for 32 guineas;! , .
