GARDEN PARTY AT PETONE.
In connection with the mission held in Petono by tho Rev. James Flanagan, ■' garden party was given yesterday by Mr. and Mrs. H. Kibblewliitc, aud proved to bo on* of tho most successful that has ever been hold iu Potone. 'Che weather was all that could bo wished, and during the afternoon tea was handed round and addresses given by tho Revs. Ward.and Cocker, both speaking of tho great work done by Mr. Flanagan in his London parish. Mr. Flanagan then gave a few instances from his work. In one part of London, a Dnohess owned a beautiful pug dog, which cost £400 nor annum to keep, and an attendant received £150 a year to walk him out, and his toilet consisted, among other things, of two Turkish baths a woek; while, on tho other hand, four miles away, a man was walking down' tho street with iba blue rings round his eyes and his teeth chattering. Sir. Flanagan walked besido him, and all at once he was seen to stop and turn nalo, and if ho had not been caught would linvo fallen to the wound. Being carried into a coffee palacoi Mr. Flanagan asked him if ho could eat anything', and lie said it was too late, but lie received a drink, and was then taken to his home, which was fireless, furintureless, only to die of starvation. "Is it any wonder," said ho "that I get a little oxcited, and the people say I am cracked, whon I find a Duchess spending £400 on a pug dog, while four miles away a man dying - of starvation." The party concluded by tho Kov. Mr. \\ard asking tho petiole to show their appreciation by accordin- Mr. and Mro. Kibb ewhito a hearty voto of tlmnks. Mr. Kibblewhite briefly returned thanks.
