■ LIST OF • THE AWARDS (DT ■ TELEGEAFII—SI'EOI AT, ' CORRESPONDENT.) New Plymouth, November 27.. . The attendance lit • the .Now- Plymouth Sh'ow 'io-Iday has been;; unusually great. The exhibits! I in a number: of the sections aro strong; notably.;in light horses', competitions, Jersoysj and the butter'contests. The pig entries are . unexpectedly weak. There is a pig boom breaking out in Taranaki, and the prevalent high, prices ate ' making the dairy farmors - increase their pig-, herds' very rapidly.' They aro . going iii for' Berkshires mostly;, .but' also 'Trimworthi and Yorkshires. Yet. at tho show there are only three Berk, shires an<J--sovon Yorkshires.' Thus,' the prospects' of > an aburidaneo of ' pork aro by 'no inea'ris reflected in to-day's . show. In: many- of the sheep sections, .where',. of .course, ; large eirtrios aronot. expected,, a .solitary exhibitor scoops the pool. The best competition is in English .Leicester?.' There are five exhibitors of Ayrqhires, two ofHolstoins, .five of. Shorthorns, one-.in Hercfqrds, two. in .Polled Angus, 'aiid.-twenty in Jerseys. Mr. M'Nab had a good deal, to learn on Certain questions, all admitted that, he was 1 wprking. very energetically, for the good of the industry. He was especially "promoting the dairying industry ■ and introducing. milking strains of Shorthorns.. Though some thought he could
bettor■leave to divisional heads some of the work- ho undertook-, all admired his .enthusiasm. Air. Gilruth' said he anticipated that much of New Zealand's so-called barren land would be made fertile largely as a ■ result of the Department's' work. Easy substitutes for cultivation in eliminating noxious weeds would, ho believed, nevor be found, although farmers had dreams of a time when they would be able to spray thoir weeds, go to bed, and wake-up to find their lands clean. . Mr. Ncw.ton King ancl Mr. Okey spoke-of tho growth of tho Society and the contemplated improvements. Sir. Okey read an old advertisement of 1858 convening the meeting which established the Society, and said of tho old promoters Mr. Hulko alone survived.
