HUTT VALLEY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

ANNUAL ROSE SHOW. The Annual Rose Show of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society was held in the Town Hall,. Lower Hutt, yesterday. This show has gradually outgrown the intentions of. the Society. Tho idea at first was to give a few members' exhibitions during the year, and an annual Autumn Show in February. The small, shows, however, have assumed popular dimensions, and this is particularly tho case with tho Society's Rose Show, which, this year, has eclipsed all previous exhibitions. THE JUDGE'S COMMENTS. Mr. T.'Waugli, who judged the exhibits, considered the roses to be in advance of anything he had ever seen before, and-he said this with an intimate knowledge of tlie English shows and gardens. Compared with those exhibited at the Wellington Rose and Carnation Show recently, be considered that the comparison was in favour of the local exhibits by fully 50 per cent. Of course, it was to be remembered, continued Mr. Waugli, that the season was a little later, and the weather had been in their favour. Those factors undoubtedly made a great differencein the quality and appearance of the exhibits. i NOTES ON THE EXHIBITS. Sopie special features of the Show deserve mention. ■ A striking collection was staged i by Messrs. Cooper, of the Hutt, and included some beautiful specimens of " Malmaison" carnations, and pelargoniums of the "Edward Perkins " variety. Mrs. W. E. Hughes's collection of roses, for exhibition only, was one of the features of the Show. Mrs. Riddiford, of the 'Hutt, exhibited a very fuio collection of pot plants, including some single and double petunias, and regal geraniums, which were greatly admired. ' Special mention must also be made of the exhibits from Mr. W. Booth, of Carterton, which, although handicapped by reason of tho distance, arrived in excellent condition. A very fine exhibit of different varieties, was that staged by tho manager of the Bellevile Gardens (Mr. Anstis).
