' Auckland, November 25. By tho steamer Cornwall from England yesterday there arrived 170 immigrants. Ninety, were assisted by tho Government. Many of thom aro women with children, who have como out to join thoir husbands , or other relativos already settled in Now Zealand. > Mr. .A. S. Danby, of the Immigration Department, 'describes the immigrants as a desirablo lot. Of 90 assisted immigrants, 52 aro for Auckland. Tho largost amount of money.- possessed by any one immigrant is £360; he is a farmer booked for Now Plymouth. Each of tho party, however, possesses a little money. BATHING PARTY'S NARROW ESCAPE. Whangarei, November 25. Two young ladies named Maude and Clarice Munro, wliilo bathing at the mouth of the Matapouri River, were carried off their feet-by a strong tide'and borno into deon water. Mrs. W. Pullman, who was bathing .with them, at once went to their assistance, and succeeded in catching hold of tho /girls, but the current was too strong to allow them to gain "'tho shore. Mrs. Clements, who was riding past at tho time, dismounted, plunged in fully dressed, and swam out to them; With her aid both girls wero placed >on a rock. FIRE ON A DREDGE. ■ ■ Core, Novombor 25. - The Waimumu Vonturo dredge was partitfly destroyed by fire last night.: When first bserved tho flame's had a good hold, but Jio dredgo was scuttled and sunk in several • feet of , water, thus extinguishing ithe fire. The pontoons and Woodwork wero a .good deal damaged, but the machinery was- not much affected. Tile dredge was uninsured. It .was privately owned, and was obtaining good returns. Dredging will be interrupted for'somo weeks until the machine is refloated , and repaired. \ TRAP ACCIDENT. Nelson, November 25. A trap occupied by Mr. T. M. Grant, chief draughtsman, and Mr. Fairhall, surveyor of the Lands Department, Nelson,' capsized 1 when crossing tho Matakitaki River oh Sunday; 'Mr. Grant suffered a fracture of the leg, and Mr; Fairhall a severe shaking. They were taken to Murchison for medical attention. AUCKLAND SUPREME COURT. ' - Auckland, November 25. At the Supreme Court' this afternoon, Richard Har'land, who was convicted last week on a charge of having committed an offence upon his niece, a girl under tho age of'sixteen, was sentenced to two'and a half fears' imprisonment. DUNEDIN. REDEMPTION LOAN. Dunedin, November 25. As the result of a visit; of tho Mayor and Councillor Smale, to Wellington, arrangements liavo been completed with tlio 'Bank of New Zealand for tho floating of a redemption loan of £250,000, falling due in March next. The price will be 98, at 4 per cent. ' i THE GAMING ACT. Auckland, November 25. . The stamping out of tho evil of street betting by tho passing of tho Gaming Act has caused great satisfaction in this city. All bookmakers' offices wore immediately closed upon its becoming known that the measure had received the Governor's assent. UNION STEAMSHIP COMPANY. Dunedin, November 25. At annual meeting of the Union Steamship Company to-day a dividend at the rate of 8 per cent.. per annum was declared, with a bonus of 2 per cent, from the insurance fund. A number of special resolutions, dealing with tho readjustment of certain reserve funds, wero passed. The retiring directors, Messrs. J. M. Ritchio'and A. Lee-Smith, were re-elected. CHARGE OF THEFT. Dunedin, Novembor 25. At the Supreme Court to-day Alexandei Ramsay was charged on seven informations with theft of money, aggregating £15 19s. collected by him at Milton, under circunv stances requiring him to account' for the same to Messrs. Wilson, Fraser and Co. bicycle agents. Invercargill. The ease wai * not finished when tho Court rose.
