SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.

It is to be hoped that tho attcndanceat tho' meeting called by Mrs. Hislop.in the Mayor's room at'the Town Hall yesterday afternoon did not afford an indication of tho amount ol interest that is likely to bo taken in the effort to raise funds' ou the Hands' Hospital Saturday, December 7. Tehro were very few people there, but fortunately they were busi-ness-like and did not-waste any time. Tlio.ydocidcd that as general, appeals to'tho public do not result in a sufficient number volunteering their serricos, it would bo better to send cirlulars to a certain number, and ask in addition for the' help of any girls or women-who h'ndnot received a circulars, but would be willing to help. . Another meeting is to bo hold in the Mayor's roam on Friday, evening at eight o'clock, by which time it is hoped that the names of two or three hundred volunteers will he received. The committee arranging for the work wish to have collectors at all tlio main points of traffic in' tho city and Newtown, and. they do not .want the workers to have to stand at their posts' for. more than three hour shifts. On Ambulance Saturday several stayed at their posts for a great many hours, instead of being relieved by fresh workers. It must bo remembered that the amount of money collected depends on tho number of collctors at work, and it is to be hoped that among the many hundreds who aro interested in the hospitals enough will be found ready to show. their sympathy in this practical manner.' On tho Sunday following Hospital Saturday tho bands will play in the Basin' Reservo, and there also a collection will bo taken up. Volunteers are wanted for this too, so if any aro better, able to spare time on that afternoon than on tho Saturday'the committoc will bo glad of their, services. : Tho average housewife can pick up some useful hints from a visit to the Homo of Compassion at Island Bay, and a look at the : alterations .tho Rev.-Mother has thought it necessary to make to save uncalled-for work. Therp aro great cupboards in some • of the rooms with many' doors, mado liko most doors, with fluted mouldings round each panel. This moulding has been taken off and replaced, by plain curved rims, which cannot catch tho dust, and the doors in eachVoom have heen treated in the same way. All the skirting boards have heen removed and replaced by cement, and now the balusters have teen taken from tho stairways and. plain little pillars put in'their places. Of' course, in an institution like tho" Homo of Compassion, the saving of labour by this moans will, bo very, groat, but even in a', small houso the woman who followed the' same method would find that she had saved herself a considerable' amount J of work. An-interesting .wedding was celebrated >t St. Luke's Church", Remucra, on Tuesday of last week, .when Mr. William Massey (son of Mr.' Massey, of Tamaki, and nephew of the Leader of tho Opposition), and Miss Etta' Probert, eldest daughter of Mr. Alfred Pro- : bert, wore married. The Revs. G. B. Monro and Perry officiated. About 100 guests were entertained at a reception after tho ceremony. Mr', and Mrs. Massey afterwards left for the South. Miss Meinertzhagen, who has' been staying at tho Royal Oak Hotel for tho last few months, loft for Napier by the Waikare yesterday afternoon. Captain Hooper, of tho Amokura, has invited all the laay members of the Wellington' branch of the Navy League to visit the training ship next Thursday afternoon. As' there arc seventy lady members the party will probably be a large' ono. • The concert to bo given to-night by the Convent pupils promises to be a very* pood one. Among the singers aro Miss Eileen Ward, "'Miss-Morrisoiij who • took • the prize' at tho Christchurch Exhibition; and Miss Segrief, wfio won a gold medal at this year's examinations of tho Royal Academy,
