CHARGE AGAINST A SEAMAN. , (FROM OUB SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) . Dunedin, November 22. Chris. Hannerson, a seaman of the s.s. Oriana, charged before the Magistrate today with disobedience in that lie would not. work, pleaded, guilty. The chief officer' said that so far as ho know tho only grievance Hannerson had was that ho wanted £7 a month, when £4 was tho articled wage. Accused: Tbero .was nothing to eat. You can't work if'voir can't get anything to eat. Wo had nothing' but peas to eat—peas for breakfast, peas for dinner, and peas .'for tea. '
Tho'chiof officer: That, was caused by tho long trip of sixty clays. The potatoes rail out, and peas had to bo substituted. Tho Magistrate: What is the ordinary length of tho trip?' . The chief officer: The trip was from New York to Australia.' It usually takes forty clays, but. this time it took sixty. Half of the potatoes went had, and had to be thrown overboard. The Magistrate (to tho chief officer): Did any of the . other men' complain about tho food? ' ' Tho chief officer: Not to me. Tho steward and tho captain have to do with the provisions. The men signed on for the regulation scale of provisions, and I know they got bettor than that. His Worship said that the accused should have, asked leave and gone ashore to complain to the proper authorities. Ho fl would lie sentenced to two days' imprisonment, and ordered to forfeit two clays' wages.
