THE ENGLISHMEN AT SYDNEY.
WICKET TO FALL. ''■,■■ BOWLING MAKES THE BATSMEN CAUTIOUS. ' BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPrRIGHT. (Rec. Nov. 22, 7.59 p.m.) Sydney, November 22. Tho cricket match between the Englishmen and New South Wales opened amid fine, warm weather. There was a strong breeze, and . tho wicket was' hard.- Tho Englishmen won the toss, and batted first. Hutchings gavo a nice exhibition, though ho was somewhat lucky. Johnson was bowling capitally, having struck his length early. Play was very slow till Rhodes and Hard•staff became associated, i with four wickets down for 118. The now partnership carried the total to 207 before the batsmen wore separated, both of them succumbing in rapid succession.
Barnes and Crawford wero uncomfortable against Cotter, who got a terrific pace on. At 233 Crawford was dismissed by Hopkins for 17, seven wickets having fallen for the total mentioned. Play thon'becamc very tedious, Barnes and Humphries stonewalling. When Humphries was dismissed, Blytho and Barnes pursued similar tactics. They crept slowly into doublo figures, when a brilliant catch by Noblo at point disposed of Barnes. Fielder, tho last man, played out time, nino wickets being down for 289. Tho scores are: ENCLAND. Not one of tho English loading batsmen has unproved his nvqrage, not oven Hardstaff, with 53. A satisfactory feature of tho innings is the fair show the bowlers aro making, Blytho, Kent's crack slow trundlor, making good his reputation for "sbmotimes getting runs," while Barnes and Fioldev have batted stubbornly. "Sundries" have scored well—too well when it is considered that ui both South Australia's innings, with Humphries behind the stumps, tho total of extras was 4; while the Englishmen gained in sundries, at South Australia's expense, M.
