Tho new fore end of the steamer Suovic was successfully launched by Messrs. Harlaiid and Wolff, Limited, at Belfast, on October-5. The Suovic, a twin screw steamer of 12,500 tons, was one of five vessels specially designed and built for tho Whito Star Line's Australian trade (tho others being the Afric, Medic, Persic, and Runic), and was originally launched at Belfast on December 8, 1000. On her last voyage home, as is well known, the Suovic wont on tho Stag Hock at the Lizard; on-' tho Cornish Coast, on March 17 last. Tho Stngj of dangerous places around-the British Isles (the Rock, is one of tho most, if not tho most, London "Shipping Gazette" says), and it.n-jis considered by tho majority of exports that tho vessel would bo a total loss, but, after careful examination tho owners and builders, along with the Livorpool Salvago Association, came to the conclusion that the greater part of tho vessel might be saved by catting her in two. This operation was therefore taken

in hand, and the vessel was successfully sovorccl by dynamite and gelignite, and the other part drawn clear of the rocks on April 2, the vessel s engines assisting the tugs by working full spend astern. This after portion (conboilers, etc;, complete) was towed to Southampton, the engines assisting in the steering by means of the twin screws, and is now in the Trafalgar Graving Dock at that port. The old bow portion was hopelessly lost on the rocks, and is now entirely out of sißlu. J lie construction of the now fore end was immediately started at Belfast. This porfi™ 5 x ' e . n(ls f rom the stem to the bulkhead aft o jNo. 3 hold, i.e., the fourth bulkhead 2 '* c ., s tem, and has a total length of about -iwtt., with deckhouses, captain's bridge, mast complete; and it was the launch of this somewhat remarkable vessel that took place ■on October 5. After being fitted out with boats and necessary appliances, it. will bo towed to Southampton, where it will bo put into the same dock as the after portion now. is, when the two will be connected together and the ship made as good as when she originally left the builders works.

The schooner Clyde left Greymouth, for Wellington, yesterday, with a cargo of timber. The Union Company steamer Karitani, which arrived at Westport, from Hobart, yesterday, caters for the coastal coal and timber trade. The Komata left Hobart on Wednesday, for Wellington. Her next port'of call is Auckland. Owing to the Christmas . holidays, the s.s. Wimmera will leave Sydney on December 20, in order to arrive in Wellington on Tuesday, December 24, instead of Wednesday, 25th. The tramp steamer Sierra Morena arrived at Wellington, from Sydney, yesterday, to take in 200 tons of 1 bunker coal. The'vessel is bound to Antofagasta, and is under the command of Captain Hannah. The Mapourika arrived at Greymouth at 10 a.m. yesterday, from Wellington, via way ports. She was expected to leave again on the return journey at 10 o'clock last night, and is due .at Wellington to-morrow.

The Huddart Parker steamer Wimmera, which left for Melbourne, via Southern ports, last evening, during her stay at Wellington took in about 750 tons of bunker coal. This is sufficient to bring the vessel back to the Dominion, should none be procurable in Melbourne.

The trawler Nora.Niven put into. Now Plymouth recently, to replenish bunkers and land a , quantity of fish. The vessel will work down the Coast nnd try in the Straits, near Cape Palliser, her next port of call being Wellington. The present charter of the Nora Niven to the Government expires on December 4. ■ The Mararoa, which has withdrawn from tho W.cllington-Lyttelton service, in favour of tho Maori, is at present laid np in the south. As soon as the atmosphere clears at Newcastle, she will/ probably enter the Sydncy-Hobart trade. The Mararoa is one of the finest fitted passenger steamers in tho company's ever-in-creasing fleet, and has always' been a ■■ favourite with travellers. She was built in. 1885 at Dumbarton for the Union Company, and is 320 ft- in length as compared with 350 ft. of tho Maori. The Marama has a length of 420 ft.
