' THE GAMING DILL. . Balclutha, November 19. _ Tho Otago Mothodist Synod met this morning at Balclutha. The Rev. W. Slade .(president of tho conference) presided. Tito-" Rev. T. N, Griffon, of Oumaru, was elected secretary. Mr. W. Rowo, of Palmerston, was to tho conference as a candidate for tho ministry. In 'the afternoon representative session Mr.. E. Rosovoro, tho district secretary of Church properties, read a roport, which showed considerable progress, tin) total value of property ill tho - district being ovqr £40,000.- ' Tho following resolution was carried unanimously,.and a copy sent to the Prima .Minister"That; while, repotting tho pro-' posals contained in.the Gaming and Lotteries Act Amendment Dill, 1907, lor the licensing ■ of bookmakers by racing cvabs, this Synod , strongly approves of the tiauses- dealing with tho suppression of ga'.'-ing houses ana of betting on tho public streets,'.ou sports.-. grounds, -and 'in factories. The Synod ', view's' with disappointment' tho fact ' that,'' though tho session is almost at an end, this' second attempt of tho present Government to deal with the gambling-evil has not yet,,"; 'been passed, and respectfully urges the Prmw ' Minister to press on the. measure with all tha forces at his disposal." Petitioner said she.' married respondent in 1592. The hearing of the disputo between the ' Agricultural Labourers' Union and ■ tlio farmers of tlio Canterbury Industrial District was resumed tp-day before the Conciliation Board. Mr. E. Kennedy, the organiser if' the Union, in the eourso of his evidence,' stated that the reason why lie had ito appeil to the Trades Council for assistance was that the organising of the Union was luunpero.l by tlio fact that, farmers were intimidating, those labourers who desired to join tho Union. 1 Hundreds of men who were willing to join were frightened to do so. Witness gave particulars of the causes which led to his dis-. missal-from the difl'orent places he was employed at. Other witnesses vero examined, and the hearing was adjourned tiH..\to - morrow.
