SHANNON.

The poles of the telephone line, which is to be erected between Shannon and Moutoa, to connect with Foxton, are at present lying at' the railway station. A new metallic circuit' wire is' to bo installed. between Shannon and I'almerston, which will be a considerable lin- . provoment on the present telephone communication between tlie two towns, A. bureau . is to be established at the local post-office. It seems to bo the general opinion here that it is high time an addition was made, to-the post-office. As it is the premises arc much too small to cope with the increasing business of the district, and this congestion will be greatly augmented on the institution of a telephone bureau. A fire broke out on Monday afternoon, in' tho swamp belonging to Messrs.. A. arid ti. ' Se.ifert's Flax-dressing Company, whose mill was formally opened' last Saturday by the ' Hon. R. M'Nab.' A' bucket brigade was es-' tablished between the swamp', and Shajinbii, ' and the fire, was quickly brought under eon- ' trol. This morning it was completely out!. It is proposed to establish • a telephone line .between all the mills in this - district, so that, in the ovent of fire occurring in one property, tho adjacent mills may be com- ' municftted with, and a large body of'' men brought on the scene.
