Tho plain licm of taffetas, Liberty satin, or velvet to] a transparent gown, whether for day or evening wear, has boon too valuable an idea to givo up quickly, and therofore (says the "Queen") we liavo scon it until we aro for the most part heartily weary of it. A newer note is struck nowadays by the pleated hem several inches dee]) or quito narrow, tho knife-kiltings tougucd at the bottom as woll as at the top, or allowed to flow free. This kilting can bo repeated prettily on the bodice, forming a sort of drawnup tucker for evening wear, or to reveal one of tho übiquitous guimpes or jabots for a day gown. The pleated jabot of some quito transparent material falling over the severer "tucker" makes a pretty contrast. Pleatings to finish off tho sleeves may be worn, but should be turned back, not allowed to hang down. Tho tiny frilling of laco, round tho high, transparent neckbands is, of course, •universally worn at present, and long sashentls have plentings to finish them, and plain or arranged in that pretty form that imitates the llutings of a cockle-shell, such as decorated "Mary, Mary, quite contrary's" garden, look very well, and aro smart in black taffetas or qiiito ephemeral black not. By the way, knife-kiltcd not or tulle is much smarter than chiffon, and rather marked spots aro in favour again as a pattern, the "pois" dear to the heart of tho Parisienne. This net makes tho now long sleoves very well, and big hats composed of fine black tullo with velvet or silken "pois" are most i becoming, of course,
