PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

LETTER FROM THfc GEAR MEAT COJO : PANY. ' ; At the meeting of the Pet-one ! Boroygti Council last night, the following letter was rdad from the' secretary of th 6 Gear Meat. Company ;—"Your letter of the 7th inst., together with the plan forwarded by the Borough Engineer, was fully considered by -the directors at their. meeting : yesterday,. and in reply thereto I am instructed to inform you that, while they, are at all times-desirous of facilitating the projects of your. Council, they regret that the proposed extension of Jatfk'son Street through the company's land; between the manure works and the.gut.factory, will so seriously hamper the.operations ■and contemplated future enlargements by. the cqm« that they must claim as compensation an amount which will to some extent recoup tho increased expenditure involved. There are four wells, and a concrete reservoir on the suggested street line which will have to be replaced. The water mains and, railway sidings Will require to be rearranged, and the levels of the latter altered.' There' will also be extra expense in unloading, coala and shunting all trucks clear of the liew road, in addition to added cost of handling fuel after tho projected extension of the boiler-house through the present bunker site. Further, there will need to be. a galvanised iron fence and gates along tho road lino, and for this expenditure, and the inconveniences detailed, the directors, cannot see their way to ask less than, £4000, • including the value of tho land to be. taken. On the other hand, I enclose a plan showing an alternative method of extension; -which will only slightly, interfere with the company's operations, and for this the directors ask merely £400. In the first instance I 'understand that the pipes- for the' city , water supply will be taken through the company's laud, "in which case there mil be further compensation to bo added; but in the proposed, alternative such a contingency does, not arise. If, on account' of tram services being.•instituted, or other causes, it: at.any- timo be. comes necessary to. have a signalman at the crossings, such must be. provided by. your council, and in cither case the company can.not move until some definite' arrangement has been made to secure -it-, from' ahy'disturbanco which might possibly arise' through tho company carrying on noxious trades'.on the present sitQs. Tho, matter is of such serious liioment to the company "that the' directors ask that you will be good enough' to allow its solicitor, Mr. T. F. Martin, to attend the council mooting at which the subi ' jeet' will' bis discussed, and give you .full details with reference to 'the items covered in the company's claim.—= Yours faithfully, W. H. Tripe, Socretary." The Council decided to instruct the e» gineer to furnish. a report on- both r routes.'
