Peters'* aml;'had a look fltv-Yinooi _ V JhoVponquorpr go'ldihg looked (Vory"woll..indeed,.-ibiit;:hti is.iscd,rt;oly!:in racing condition yet. Mr. Peters believes in steady

progress, and tlio big three-year-old (ho stands ncnrly 17 hands) is being given an easy preparation. Vinco might be dubbed a commoner in some quarters, but he looks a thoroughbred, overy inch of him, and I look to him to havo a vory succesEful careor. It is intondod to give him plenty of experience in travelling and racing, and he 'will be a starter at Blenheim this week.

After-seeing Vinco, I wont on' to see Ukraine, tho full sister to Munjcct. Mr. "Lance Wood,", her owner, was presont, and 'was very, proud of tho filly, which was 'saddled up and made to trot tho, round. It would bo difficult to note a defect in tho daughter of Stopniak and Madder,- and it .would be, well nigh impossible to find anicer looking filly anywhere. All going well,, it is tho intention of her owner to raco her at the Manawatu Racing Club's meeting next month, and later on at tho Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting. As a three-year-old, the filly may bo given a chance to , earn distinction in Australia, but a good deal will depend on what happens in the meantime.

' Among-tho numerous other horses I .saw .was a three-year-old,-by Pilgrim's Progress out of Leda —the property of Mr. Davies. 'This is a remarkably fine-looking colt, that would havo been racing before now but .for ■'an. injury to his shoulder which incapacitated him_ for a couple of months. Llanwern, as he is called, is now in work again, and if 'he stands a preparation all right may be ■seen out iboforo thecloso'of the present season. Like.all''the. thoroughbreds under Mr. 'Da view's caro ho is a remarkably docile cieaturo, . awl .will do , almost, anything :at the call-of. hisi attendant.. The St. Leger. horse,. Molwo'od, is in work ■ once more, and will be raced again if bis legs . stand the test. In spite of his increasing age tho little fellow looks as fresh as a ■ two-year old, but this is not surprising, considering tho easy life ho has led. An omission from the now Gaming Act is tho fact that it makes no mention, whatever, of totalisator inspectors. Under the present system ,the public havo to take it for granted that everything is fair and abovo board., They have no chance of preventing money.being rung on a winner or withheld from a loser,' and no guarantee of any kind that matters aro managed fairly. There has boon enough .clamour during tho last twolvo months to warrant .the .appointment, of ■totalisator inspectors. *.-.'■-. Should the Gaming Bill'pass iu its present form, no offenders will bo given tho chanco of trial by jury as-'the' maximum penalty for any offence against tho Act is three months' imprisonment. This is a point that has' not- been generally recognised. The Hon. George M'Lcan received word from Sydney hist week that his yearling foal by Sir Footo had met with an accident and had to bo destroyed. Tho Dunedin sportsman is meeting with more than ( his share of hard luck.
