A BRAVE RESCUE.
Major' Herbert Campbell,Holmari, D.5.0., of the: Indian-Army, recently saved the life of a Swiss by an act of,great gallantry. . Major Holman and his,wife were walking along . the banks of the River Aare, at Thun, when their attention was 'attracted by a shouting, gesticulating crowd. • A man was. seen to bo drowning 'in tho rapids. No one has ever been.known to.es-cape-who has fallen into these waters, and nobody in the crowd 'dared enter to attbmpt to save the man. ■ '■ •,' '• ; .• -. Without-a moment's-hesitation.Major'Hol-man plunged in and reached the drowning man, whom ho seized. A great struggle between the two followed as they wore swept along by the swift stream, and-the excited crowd on the banks saw.them both disappear repeatedly beneath the water. It was thought that they wero drowned, when Major Holman again appeared on-tho surfaco, still holding the Swiss, whom lie dragged to the shore. The major, who was completely exhausted, was received by the crowd with loud shouts of "Bravo, Anglais 1" The drowning Swiss afterwards recovered; and Major Holman, who refused to' give, his name, jumped into a cab, and with his wife drove off to his hotel. , . . .
