SIR LEWIS. MORRIS, POET. . BT TELEGRAPH— TOESS ASSOCIATION—COrTRIODT. London, November 12. Tho death is announced of Sir Lewis Morris, poet. The late Sir Lewis Morris was born in- 1533 in Carmarthen, and was descended from tho Welsh poet who flourished during tho early part of the eighteenth century. Ho was educated at Shcrborno and Oxford, 'whore ho won high scholastic distinctions. lie practised at tho Bar from 1861-1881, and subsequently dovoted himself to local work in Wales in connection with education and' politics, being Deputy-Chancellor of the University of-Wales and Vice-President of the University College at Aborystwyth. Ho served on Lord Abcrdnro's. Commission of Inquiry into tho higher education of the principality, and was chairmnn for some timo of tho National Eisteddfod Association. He stood for tho Carmarthen Boroughs in ISSI, but retired, and in .1886 unsuccessfully contested the Pombroko Borough seat. Jn 1877 lie was nißilc an honoiary fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, and in 1595 was made n knight-bachelor. In 1872, 1871, and 1875 ho issued the first, second, and third volumes of " Songs of Two Worlds," which appeared anonymously. These volumes wore soon followed by the three books of tho "Epic of Hades," and filter by "Gwen," "The Ode of Life," "Songs Unsung," "Gycia," "A Vision of Saints," "Songs of Britain," "Idylls nnd Lyrics," " Harvest Tide," nnd many other books of vei'se, besides articles and addresses on literary and educational subjects.

L. M'LEOD. London, Novembor 12. Obituary. Lewis M'Leod, a lato Cambridge footballer. The deceased is apparently tho L. If. M'Leod who played against the "All Macks" ns a Cambridge University footballer and Scotch International. Ho and his younger brother, K. G. M'Leod, both proved solid three-quarters, both being line line-Kickers, and the younger having pace. They were the best of Scotland's three-quarter lino.

MR. ALLAN .M'LEAN. (BY TELEGRAPH—BFECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) Ghristchurch, Novon;W 13. Tho late Mr. Allan M'Lcan, whose' death occurred hero to-day, arrived in New Zealand from Australia in 1852, and shortly afterwards purchased a leasehold of 10,000 acres on tho banks of tho Wainmknriri, some thirteen miles from Christchurch, stocking it with merinos from Australia. His tivo brothers, his mother, and two sisters, joined him about a year later. It whs, not long before they secured 50,000 acres on Government lease of what is now tho Lagmohr ostato near Ashburton, Mr. Allan M'Lean being nearly drowned when crossing tho llakaia on his way to explore tho new country. In 1858 they heard of good country further south, and John M'Lean 'set off alono on horseback on a prospecting oxpcdition. In tho end ho reached tho Molyncux, nnd, arriving at Duneclin, scoured tho leasehold of 430,000 acres, which the brothors stockod. Mr. Robertson M'Lean returned to Scotland in 1865, and somo ton years later the other two dissolved partnership, John tailing tho north Otago estates and Laghmor, and Allan tho Waikakohi on tho Waihao and Wnitnti- as his share. In tho 'nineties the Government purchased Wnikaehi for close settlomont. The brothers lived retired lives, but their hospitality was proverbial, and there was a building at Waikakohi with sixteen bunks which was maintained for tho benefit of swaggers, who wcro fed and lodged for tho night, and sent on their way in the morning. Mr. Allan M'Lean somo years ago built an enormous houso in Manchester Street north in Chrietchnrch, and has lived hero over since. It is reported that a largo share of his estate has been bequeathed to public purposes-
