Mr. Allan M'Lean, brother of the late Hon. John M'Lean, M.L.0., at one time owner of the Laghmor Estate, Ashburton, and of Waikouaiti, North Otago, died in Christchurch yesterday morning, aged eighty-four. He was unmarried. Major-General Dorwood, of South Africa, who has been spending a few days in Wellington, will leave for . Rotorua via Napiet this morning. It is his intention to spend a few weeks trout fishing in tho Auckland district. ' , Dr. W. Thomas having decided to take « rest after fifteen years' work as secretary of tho Christohurch Bowling Club, tho members, decided to show their appreciation of his many services to the club by making him a presentation. This took place on the green on Saturday afternoon last, the giffl consisting of a very handsome silver salver bearing an inscription. Mr. D. Johnston, for • tho last six years Collector of Customs at Wellington, is retiring from the Government service at the end of tho year. Mr. Johnston joined the Customs Department as far back as 1860, and his career has beon one of steady advancement. He served as a clerk at Collingwood and Greymouth over forty years ago, and was afterwards attached to tho Auckland staff. Then ho acted as Collector at the Thames for a time, and was subsequently appointed Collector of Customs at Gisborne, whero he remained for eighteen years. He left Poverty Bay in 1894 to assumo similar duties at Invcrcargill, where ho remained for seven years, and on Mr, James M'Kellar's rotiremont from the position of collector horo somo six, years ago Mr. Johnston was appointed his successor,
