Dr. Gardiner, at Winchester, the collector of Hampshire folk songs, has just spent fifteen days at the Portsmouth Workhouse in search of curious and old-fashioned ditties. Judging from a letter he soht to' the guardians acknowledging the kindness and courtesy extended to him liy tho Bfiard and the officials, he has found the. place quite a " gokl mine." In the course of his researches ho discovered no fewer than a hundred songs. Amongst the ancient ballads remembered were "Lady Maisio" and "Sir Hugh of Sweden," and tho tune of the former Dr. Gardiner described as " exouisito "
