WITNESSES EXPENSES.
CORONER ORDERS PAYMENT. The question of tho, payment of witnesses at Coroners' inquests cropped up at an inquest ■ held yesterday afternoon at tho Morgue. One of tho witnesses said he had lost a day's pay, and asked for expenses. Tho Coroner (Mr. James Ashcroft) said that if tho witness had lost time ho should be recompensed, and that he had better make out a voucher and present it to tho polico. He, personally, had no means of paying witnesses. _ Sergeant Phair: "It's very unusual. I've never known witnesses to bo paid for attending an inquest." The Coronor: "Oh, I have, lots of times. Thero was a case at the Upper Hntt tho other day. Besides, tho Minister had tho matter before him quite recently — a caso from Auckland — andv he was very .clear on the point that tho Government did pay where ■' it was necessary."
