THE FLOUR DUTY.

Nobody has had a good word to say for the freak Bill introduced on Friday ostensibly with the object of preventing monopolies in food stuffs.- In fact, there has been a unanimous chorus of condemnation throughout the country, and in tho face of this public disapproval it is unlikely that tho Government will persist with the Bill. Bread it Bd.'a loaf no doubt means a considerable increase in the cost of living, but as the causo is a world-shortage of grain, and not one that can be met by any local remedy, the public must just grin and bear it. Some little relief would be given by the removal of tho wheat and (lour duties, but Parliament decided against that course, and thero is really nothing to bo done in tho meantime. For somo months at any .rate many householders will have to exorcise considerable prudence and economy in the matter of bread, and whero thore is no waste there should bo little actual want.—Christchurch " Truth."
