IMITATING CHICAGO GIRLS.

H ~ a pretty brunette, of tho department of tho Nord, had (says tho Paris correspondent of tho "Daily Telegraph") just reached tlio age of 20 when she prevailed on her parents to allow her to pay a visit to Paris. She had read much about the independence of tho American girl, and, wishing to imitate her, refused to travel with a companion. She convinced her parents that she was sufficiently strong in body and mind to tako entire caro of herself, arid nothing would give her greater satisfaction than to go to Paris alone and see tho sights, with a guide-book in her hand, liko any girl from Chicago. The paronts, after much opposition, at last consented, but on tho condition that sho should go to an hotel whose proprietor they knew, and who was from tho samo part of tho country. • Mdllo. H-— had been for some days in Paris, and was enjoying tho sights immensely. In a cafe she made 'tho acquaintance of a handsomo, well-dressed young man, who, liko herself, had nothing to do, and who offered to accompany her to some places of amusonient in Montniartre, which she had not yet seen. Sho accepted, and, after visiting the Moulin Rouge, tho Rat Mort, and other gay places in that quarter, ho oscortcd her homo, and pushed his politoness so far as to accompany her to her room, whore, after another pleasant chat, tho girl suddenly foil asleep. Whon she woke up sho was horrified to find that all her valuable, things had been stolen, together with a sum of IOOOf. She lodged a complaint with the police, but as she drew n cheque on tho following day, sho was not too much inconvenienced by tho occurrence, and had mado up- her mind never to lot her parents know what had happened. A few evenings later, however, sho happened again to see the handsome young man who had robbed her, and who was enjoying thn play. She waited patiently, and, after lenving the theatre, followed him to tho boulevard Magenta, where' sho tried to have him arrested. He turned on her with n knife, and, after stabbing her in tho lungs, Hod. Mdllo, ll—— was conveyed to tho hospital, and there she is lying still, hovering between lifo and death, as a consequence of her attempt to imitato the independent girl from Chicago,
