' NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Glencoe.) Six furlongs is apparently too far for Russloy Maid, as that distance found her out on both days at Clarevillo. Tupono was not started at Clarevillo on Saturday, but when slio appeared in the Dalefield Hack on Monday tho public made her a pronounced favourite. She never loft tho issue in doubt, and at tho end of tho journey she had everything well gone. , Despite tho fact that Full Rate was " thrown in " by the. handicapper at Clarevillo, there were two candidates better backed in the Telegraph Handicap. An inquiry followed on his win yesterday. The stewards had very littlo ground to work oil, for any horses that Full Rate met on both days he was meeting on tho same or on better terms yesterday as compared with the first day, and in addition to this, Tho Stake and Gawain, the first and second horses on Saturday, wore not started in tho Telegraph Handicap. Old Ilntley ran well in the mud, and when lie jumps a littlo better a hurdle race might come his way. ( Tilson's recent performances suggest that lie might win a mile and a half hurdle race

shortly, but at the best lie is only a moderate performer, and seems to lose his bisatb very quickly. ~ I° a Tuhi again gave a lot of trouble at the start yesterday, and was last away. He would probably have been second had lie got away decently. Aboriginal was made favourito for the J olograph Handicap, but had no chance with any of the placed division. Naphtha was in a good position throughout the Grandstand Hack Welter, and won nr t s °methiu S to spare at the finish, liwha and Gaelic made the pace for six iuiiongs, and were then done with. Bclario came to the front nearing the straight, but in the last couple of hundred yards ho was unable to foot it with Naphtha. a K u began very slowly in this event, and though he made up a lot of ground later 011, never got up with the leaders. He is a big luTiibersoiiio gelding, and evidently requires a lot of shaking up. _ Naphtha and Scotch Reel, who had previously started during tho afternoon, were withdrawn from tho Clareville Handicap. Ilosegrove was also taken out of the big race and reserved for the Carterton Welter, lower down, the programme. Sherlock Holmes was in tho lead for four iurlongs in the Clareville Handicap, but, alter mat, was never prominent. Moata was in a good position till the bottom turn was reached, but failed at the finish. The lightweights, Tangimoana and Saudix, lad the race to themselves in tho last furlong, and Tangimoana, who was nicely piloted by T. Carroll, easily prevailed over the chestnut. Both of these two are by San Fran. Tlje Stake was made a hot favourite for the Clareville Handicap,'but the heavy going was evidently not to his liking, and 'he had absolutely 110 chance with the two San Fran's. Research threw his rider twice and rolled on him prior to the start of the Taratahi Hack, and as neither horse nor rider showed any disposition to go on with th© game the raco was started without them. Jockey Hatch was, luckily, not seriously injured. Houyhnhtnn with the services of a stronger horseman might have finished better in tho Taratahi Hack, but the winner, Rangihaota, is evidently in good nick just now, and was, perhaps, unlucky to be beaten on Saturday. Fifteen starters went out in tho Hack 'Scurry, which proved a good thing for tho roan filly Royal Maid. Formidable got away badly, and was unable to get anywhero near the front division. Reveille, who ran third in tho Scurry, changed hands a couple of hours before the race. Tho Stake and Sherlock Holmes made a second appearance in tho'Carterton Welter, for which Gawaln was made the hottest fav-, ourite of tho day. Tho Sir Lancelot gelding let his backers down badly, and finished out of a place. Rosegrovo began very slowly in this_race, and at half-way he appeared to have no clianco, but ho made up his ground nicely, and won with a well-timed run. Everyone was pleased with his success, as his owner has been racing with very hard luck lately. Rosegrovo was the second of Rangipuhi's stock to score' during tho'day. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB.
