The Union Company's new turbine steamer, which replaces the Mararoa in the LytteltonWelhngton ferry service on November 18, is driven by five Parson's turbines, three for going ahead and two for going astern. Her speed at the trials on the Clydo was 20J.knots, with five out of six of her boilers in use, and with full dead-weight' on board. The Maori i? luxuriously fitted up/ with accomn 'ation for 425 first-class and 130 second-class passengers, and the' after end of the lower deck is arranged for a second-class temporary extension to accommodate fifty additional passengers in the busy season. Waihora, on route to Calcutta, arrived Singaporo, November 4. Consignors arc notified by advertisement in our columns of tho arrival of the Tyser Co.'s steamers Star of Irelaud and Niwaru. An exceptionally slack day was experienced in shipping circles yesterday, thoro being only two arrivals and one departure during the day. Advice received from Westport yesterday states that the coastal steamer Oreti left that port at 1.15 p.m. ( and is due, hero to-day. Tho Union Company's steamer Mararoa was delayed at Wellington from 8 o'clock last night until 4.30 this morning, owing to tho steering apparatus going wrong. A West Coast excliango reports that the .three-masted schooner Eunice is ready for soa, and will leave Hokitika, for Wellington, first opportunity. After discharging about 1000 tons of cargo at Wellington, tho Oriana, which arrived on Sunday, from Now York, via ports, will leave for Lyttelton and Dunedin, thence to Sydney. It is expected the vessel will sail about licit Thursday. The Hauroto, now on her wav from Fiji to Wellington, via Auckland, is bringing the following cargo for this port:—7Gso cases and 950 bunches bananas, 1000 cases pines. Tho Southern cargo is—For Lyttelton: 5350 eases bananas. For Dunedin: 485 cases pines. According to tho "Auckland Star," tho new steamer Kaipatiki, built by Mr. W. H. Brown, of Auckland, for Messrs. Bradneyand Binns, of tho same city, was launched on Thursday. The vessel will take up the Pitoitops running in tho harbour trade, tho latter steamer having been sold to a firm at Waitara. Tho I(air patiki is 60ft. overall, 12ft. beam, with about 4ft. depth of hold. She is built on the tunnel principle, and can, carry a full cargo on a comparatively small draught- of; water. Messrs. Bradney and Binns,aro having'built for tho Kiverhend trade another new. steamer.
