THE CHICAGO STRIKE.
A meeting was held in tho Socialists' Hall, Manners Street, last night, to commcmorato the death of the men. who havo become known as the " Chicago, Martyrs." Comrade Eagle, occupied the chair, .and about fifty were present. Addresses wore given by Comrades M'Mahbn, Josephs, and I'itzgerald. Hie speakers described the efforts which had been made in the United States, prior to 1887 (tho year in which tho " atrocities " had been committed), to secure for tho, workers an eight-hour day and other necessary reform's. They pointed out that, between 1861 and 1856,. 6vor .25,000 millionaires had been created, whilst 20 ; 000,000 workers were on the verge of starvation. , During that period, each .worker, had, they averred, produced commodities of the valuo of £10 per day, whilst ho had received only a paltry 4s. 9d. each day in return.. For two years prior, to 188(5, offorts had been made to educate tho workers, and, as a result, the great Chicago strike bad occurred.. Those who had suffered the death penalty were not personally responsible, but tho Government, which represented Capital, was/determined to get rid of these men. Tho speakers advocated tho organisation of international labour, tho abolition of government in any shapo or form, and absolute freedom of tho workers. They preferred tho position taken up by Mr. Tom Mann to that which had been assumed by Mr. John Burns. The former had suffered imprisonment in his endeavours to obtain the liberty of free speech, whilst the latter had elected to bo banqueted by Royalty rather than espouse tho cause of the workers. Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co. announce in our advertising columns an important sale to be held in tho Town Hall, on January 15 nctt. 'l'ho Marainangn Estate, comprising acres, has been subdivided into 22 blocks of various areas, which will bo offered to the public on easy terms.
