The vessel left I'Tmders Jiav on October 10 and two days later called nt Albany for coal. Hie only bad weather experienced was in crossmg (he. She has' 11 cargo of.ibon 2,100,001) feet of ti>nbe r . of eh -130,000 feet ivill be discharged at Wellington. ] vlblton and Dunediii are the next por of call, (hence Hie Hn>i7 Itnel proceeds to l'ort Pine. Kydload wool for Dunkirk. Antwerp, ami London. Captain L-rtaud is in command.
THE LOW LEVEL LIGHT. Tlio various Inavv logs experienced during the past winter have proved beyond doubt the value of Hie low level light, which was erected at Pencarrow. The new light lias been of service on various ccensions when the Pencnrrow lighthouse lias been obscured by fog, and shipmasters have been able to pick, up the low light underneath the fog line both coming in and leaving the port. Little difficulty has been experienced in keeping the light in order, and it is staled that it has only given trouble on ■ouo occasion. The cause was soon ascertained, and a patent has been installed which will prevent a repetition of the trouble. The same patent has been fitted on the light buoy off the Falcon Shoal with satisfactory results. AN INTERESTING VESSEL. The familial'- AY'angaiiui trader, Stormbird, has a record of usefulness such as few vessels can show. The hoary old packet is now fiftythree years old, and she can still easily hold her own with any modern vessels of the same size. The Stormbird .was originally launched at the Clyde Shipbuilding yards in 1854, and was brought out to .Melbourne; where she remained for some years, and then came to New Zealand, running here under the New Zealand Shipping Company, until she whs purchased by her present owners, the Wellingtou-Wau-ganui Steam Packet Company, Por thirty 7 fouv years the vessel has been engaged in her present trade, Wellington "to Wanganui. Originally the Stormbird was'only G7 tons register, but in 1883 she was cut in two and lengthened. Since that time other alterations have, been made, at intervals'to keep the vessel up .to the mark.
■Mr. Cooper joined the Hawca yesterday, as chief offiecr,~"vice Mr. Header, who came ashore for orders. ..' The Government steamer Hinemoa, weather permitting, is, to leave' Dunedin on Thursday for the Cape Saunders lighthouse. / The doparturo jf the. Union Company's steamer Hawea for. AVestport has again been postponed, owing to the inability of the Railway Department to supply rolling stock to receive the vessel's cargo of coal. /
The Now Zealand Shipping,; Company's steamer Opawa is due at Auckland from London to-day. On discharging the cargo for that port, 5000 tons, she pocceds to Wellington, and should arrive here about November 5.
The steamcr_Aymeric, late under charter to the Union Company, -.vill, on leaving this port, proceed to Newcastle, thence to;. San Francisco, to enter the hew 'Frisco service to Auckland and Sydney. •'/ The, Union Company's steamer Arahura was timed to learo Greymoiith at 8 last night, Westport at 1 this morning, Nelson 2 this afternoon, Picton this evening, finally arriving at •Sellingtou late to-night or early on Thursday morning. / " ■ i The Euccntaur, which has just come out of the Calliope Dock* at Auckland, goes to Melbourne, and- will return /to New Zealand to complete her loading for Honolulu and Vancouver. Captain Large, of the Pondo, is now in charge of the' Bucentaur.
The Huddart, Parker Company's steamer Zoalandia ip expected to leave Sydney for Auckland to-morrow, one day late. VTlic vessel is undergoing her annual survey at Sydney, and will probably arrive here at. advertised time, i.e., on Friday, November 8.
Messrs. Levin and Company, local agents for the Northern Steamship Company, advise that the steamer Karawa will miss a trip next month, v:;;., November 21, from Onchuriga, and November 22 from New Plymouth. The P.arawa is to come to Wellington in December to go' on the Patent Slip. She will leave New Plymouth for hereon December 9. and will resume running thence on December'll. The steamer Torgnuten, of the Maoril mil Steamship Company's fleet, Captain Waddi-love,-arrived at Auckland last Sunday, from Picton, with a full cargo of produce." The master reported leaving Picton on October 22, and making a fine run to the' East Cape; thence strong west and south west winds prevailed to time of 'arrival.. The - Torgauten left • on' Monday for Tairua.'to load timber for Wellington. v Just at the present time, says a Sydney exchange, it would seem there is a perfect epidemic of disloyalty amongst the sailors in the vessels lying in Port Jackson, and desertions and disobedience of orders are of everyday occurrence. The reason appears to be that there aro openings everywhere for able seamen. In addition to tliis the men here receive better wages than those on foreign sea-going vessels, and 'are better treated generally on British ships, both in food and otherwise. ■ An indication of the rapid progress made in engineering by : the Japanese is illustrated by the construction of the cablesliip Og'asawara Maku, recently completed at Nagasaki, dockyard from the designs of Professors Shiba and Sayehiro. The Japanese Government already owned two cableshins, but they wero of foreign construction. The 7 new cablesliip is a twinscrew steel stehmcr of HSS tons, Iniilt in-five water-tight compartments, and will have tanks capable of holding COO kilometres of deep sea 'cable.
-The. s.s. Harbart, which arrived at Lvttelton from. Japan last Simday, with" 1550 tons of superphosphates, is 3310 tons gross resistor, and 2119 tons net. Tho Harbart is ■3.10 ft. Tin. in length, .4,5 ft. tin. in beam, and is fitted with triple expansion engines of 209 nominal horsepower. The vessel was built in 1002 at'Stockton by .Messrs. Craig, Taylor, and Company. Captain Bowling is in command. After discharging her consignment of superphosphates for Lyttclton, the Harbart will go to Auckland to complete her'discharge. She will then, it is, slated, leave, for Newcastle. The crew is composed of Chinamen, with tho exception of two Japanese.-
