POWER FOR THE PEOPLE.
MUNICIPAL ENTERPRISE. ' ' The appearance-.of a portion of Lambton Quay yesterday was reminiscent of the street lipu'uaval of enrce or four years ago, when tdo tramways and wood-blocking were, being installed, irlany who watched, the proceedings yesterday Were curious to know iwhy. che. neatly-laid paving stonos should-bo thrown tip and- u trench substituted. Enquiries made by a Dominion reported elicited the news that the City Council was about to seriously cope with the demand for electrical power by •■private people, and'the trenching operation was the space for the cable duct for the reception of a ' pair of .35 cables which are to supply tho section between Grey Street and i'liriimcr's Steps on the Quay. . , At present there are about sixty private lirms Doing supplied with power from the municipal power house, but these have been accommodated either by running out special overhead cables or tapping a supply from tho tramways' trolley wires.; The! responsibility is now to bo shifted to independent cables loading direct from tho power hoiiso to different points about'tho city. Tho area to be. served under the present'scheme-is bounded by Victoria Street, Cambridge Terrace, Tory Street, Vivian and.lngcstre Streets, Upper Willis Street (from the Ingestro Street corner), Lambton Quay as far as the Government Railway Station, ,and Custom House, iviid Jervois Quays. One .5 (Jin. solid copper) cable will bo laid Jown Victoria Street and Hunter Street, to fcjio southern end of Fcatherstone Street, thence dropping' away in size to'tho Government Railway Station. At .the same timo 3xtra conduits (consisting of three-inch fibre pipes to be laid down in concrete) are being put down for the future needs of the city, so that extra' services can always bo added to. the system. Provision in this direction is being made by putting do\yn. oighteon of such conduits leading west (citywards) from the power house, and twelve to tho east. The ,35 cable that is being laid along the Quay is' being embedded in bitumen in a wooden i irough on in what is kno.wn as tho solid system. Other cables for side services arc the .125 cables, which will serve the streets jotweon those traversed by tho larger cabins —all being.Glover's bitumen-insulated cables. . The work, which is being attended to by Mr. Russell, foreman of the overhead service, s not expected to bo completed before March next. ' ' .'•'■',
