LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

THE REV. V J. J. NORTH IN REPLY, Sir,—Your sub-leader, with • the familiar, heading "An Intemperate Clone, . camo : by accident into my hands in tins town, it- is uy now probably forgotten by your readers, ana explanation is, perhaps, superfluous. 1 may, however, say just this, that, you used excerpts from an address at uracil's meeting on the economic question. 1. stated the case as you or any one else would have statcd.it. Here is a citv GO years old and with a population of 60,001). Optimistic citizens anticipate that in 50 years more a quarter or., a million of- people will live here. let now rents aro on London. level. Houses, are divided between two or more families. Gardens are as large as blankets. Tho streets arc almost tho only resort of -all save the children of tho well-to-do. Tho suburbs-nrc all exploited by .laud syndicates, and no working man buys his plot within easy radius of the citv without paying prices that, mean huge fortunes to laud dealers. Tueso things constitute a scandal. Isay it, though I yield to. none in love for tho city. And the scandal, with us is more acute than in any other city in this Dominion. Is it not sad, almost beyond expression, that we should bo building a 'city on these lines in those Southern Seas. Sir, you turned into a sensation a phrase, which lying in its context'was of ordinary temperature. If your paper is to servo .the community you will he saying ' oxtravagant things of ttiis sort before your anniversary is roached. I hope you may say them soon.— I am etc., ' J- •>• NORTH. Rotorua, Oct. 21, 1907. REGISTRY OFFICES. . Sir,— Observing through various newspapors of the Dominion that the registry pffico keepers arc attempting to niako a protest against tho now scale of fees charged to cmployors and employees, I strongly support the movement of closing down all registry offices throughout tho Dominion. 1 suggest that the Government establish a free registry attached to its labour depot.—l am, etc.,- . EMPLOYEE. Nelson, Oct. 22. ■. ' ■ , ' ~ ;

BLOCKING THE MEIKLE BILL. . Sir, —In your issue of to-day you state that Mr. Lawry, the member for l'arnell, ; stated that ono gentleman in Auckland,gave Mcikle £5 to help Meiklo in,his campaign. lam pleased to say that there is not one word of the statement correct. No. person in Auckland over gave mo £5 to J help me to-i>ro-sccuto my case. It.has also been statedtliat a syndicato lias run the Moiklc case./ This is totally untrue, and no person-feels more than I do that gentlemen of'repute should havo their characters traduced by Mr. Hornsby and Mr. Remington. As -to clearing the galleries about my evidence, let the truth go forth to the world, and let Mr'. Remington read the evidence of Meikle. It is,not the evidence of Meikle that would mako a lady nshaincd, but it is the vile and untrue statements made by others before, the Commission in Dunedin that would make any decent woman ashamed. Mr. Editor, .it is my/intention and wish >to produce a list of money that I hare had to'borrow to carry on my case. Every name shall be furnished to the M.H.'R., and the address of 1 each-gentleman that has lent mo money to carry on tbo case, and it will pa the duty of Mr.Hornsby and Mr. Romirigtori to publish tho list 'of borrowefi money I.have received for the past four years. I ma.v also state that no: M.H.R. at auy time ever asked me to say or. do a wrong action to any member of: the, House. I have received support from both sides of the House for the-past twelve years, and I can only thank the. members, for the-kindly support that I have at the present time received. Trusting you will insert the above. —I am, etc., J. J. MEIKLE. , Wellington,■.' October 25. ' ,: ■
