Yesterday Was the concluding day of the Salvation Army's Self-denial month. All the returns'are not yet in, but Brigadier Alliston feels confident that the North Island will surpass its last year's record of .'£5500; which represented .an increase of £600 on the figures of two years ago. Yet the stars m their courses havo fought against the big Salvationist effort , this year. Unusually heavy rains have been experienced during the progress of the campaign, and hundreds of settlers in the " way-hack" districts were not approached, because it was impossible to get to thorn. The Gisborne district and the north of Auckland have been notable in this respect, and from tho north of this province, an officer reported that he had been riding up to his horse's girth in mud, and could not make tho visits he had marked down. The forest reserve of 45,000 acres, in the East Taupo and Waimanno counties, offered for lease by public auction, for a term of twenty-one. years, was acquired by Mr. L. W. Last night the League was in tho position of haying four games set'down for to-day and only. ,ono pitch.
