Mrs Tattcrsall, widow of 'Mr. Edmund Tattersaii at the age of 09, died on September 8 on the forty-fifth anniversary of her wed■diritt On the female side the Tattersalls, who from generation to generation have conducted the'business of the world-famed horse mart, aro of the ancient and,erst P°™» ul Scottish noble family of Somemllo. The. foTnder, Richard -TaUersall "Old; Tatt," married a granddaughter of the twelfth Baron Somerville.' Their on y son, Edmund, Edmund I." continued the business when Old Tatt" died in 1795. The fifteenth Baron Somervillc was a skilled agriculturist, and assisted George 111 to breed merino sheep. When tlio 'seventeenth baron died the title became dormant. ,
•Threo workmen wore drowned in the canal' ■at Widnes, England* on September 12, by the capsizing of n punt, caused by overcrowding. Tho men were employed at the Hutchinson works of the United Alkali Company, situated on each side of tho canal. To save walking over bridges, a punt twelve feot long by four broad, known at tho yorks as the "Coffin," is used for conveying workmen from one portion of the works to another. Eighteen men ; wero returning'in the punt from their midday meal and when they wore half-way across the canal, which is eighty feet broad and ten feet deep, the overweighted craft sank. All tho men wero thrown into tho water. Assistance was quickly at hand, and all but three of the men were rescued. The victims were William Price, William Miller, and Ernest Kelsall. Their bodies were recovered by boathooks.
