A SHEPHERD WANTED.
.A .visitor who spent .the week-end in the country relates (says: the "Ashburton Guardian") a surprising incident. that occurred while he was walking through, a,flock of breeding ewes.. One.of the flock:had just dropped a lamb, and,: having-taken "fright at something, she ; left lier offspring., .■■ Tliis , ■gave.: tho opportunity-to a seagull'that was hovering around, to pounco. down on;' tho lamb, ;which it:did.with one swoop,: and.proceeded to pick., out:the, eyes .of-, the ;lamb,v which , , had not gained sufficient: strength to, usg, its legs. On making inquiries, • the visitor ascertained that of late years seagulls have been known to kill newly-born lambs in tho way indicated;: and: , even to. settle:on ;a live cast sheep and pick its eyes put. Does it not pay farmers to keep shepherds,' especially during the lambing season? ■
