HAIRDRESSERS ASSISANTS' CLAIMS.
— :-♦ . The Wellington Hairdressers' Assistants' Union is trying to arrange a conference with employers, with a 'Mew to having certain claims discussed and settled, without reference to the Conciliation Board. The claims are to the following effect:—That two classes of labour shall be recognised, i.e., journeymen and apprcticDs, the former being defined as those who have worked for not less than nve years at the trade. The hours of labour shall bo fifty-two per week,-to be worked between the hours of 8 a.m. and G p.m.- on (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. One hour .for dinner between the hours of 12 noon and 2. p.m. is to be. allowed. On Wednesdays the hours of work arc to be from 8 a.m.' till 9' p.m., with one hour for dinner and tea -eRpeotively. No assistant shall be eniployed on Sundays. The union rale demands"' wages at the minimum rate of £3 per week, anil In'. Jd. per hour for casual labour. For journeymen engaged in board work,. the wages asked are £3 10s. per week as a minimum. The scale of pay demanded for apprentices is as follows:—For first six - months, 7s. 3d.; second, 10s.; second year, 155.; third year, .CI 2s. Gd.; fourth and fifth years, £1 2s. Gd. per weeki A clause in tho claims provides for incompetent -journeymen being employed at less than the minimum wage, under special conditions. Apprentices are limited to one for Ihrep journeymen employed at the same establishment. Ten holidays per annum with full pay aro included in the claims, and preference to unionists is demanded.
