A lad named Harry Toon, who, on Octohor 15, pleaded guilty at.Pahiatua to forging and uttering, was set forward. Mr. Tripp asked that tho provisions of tho First Offenders' Probation Act be extended to tho lad,, who, he said, had boon led away by othors. The money which had'been obtained by means of.the valueless document would bo refunded.' •'- ~..,' ■ His Honour Mr. Justice Buttou said itwas a very sad thing to sec so young a lad before the Court for such a serious offence. Ho did 'not know whothor stable boys were brought in contact with ovil companions in thp courso of tlioir work, but several had .been before him during, • tho past six or eight, months.. Ho would release tho prisoner on probation '■ for twelve months on condition that tho father .floggod him soundly in the yard attached to the Court and guaranteed the pay'mont of the money unlawfully obtained, an'l 'of the costs of the prosecution. '-'The flqgjging," said his-Honour, "must be such.as would have >beori administered at a.' public school in tho olden, days." . So far, no' cases have been set down for -hearing to-day.
