Mr. Bon Tillott, the English Socialist and labour leader, addressed a crowded audience in the Opera House 1 last-ovening on " Environment and Character." .Referring to Bishop Neligan's remarks a few days ago concerning gambling, Mr. Tillett said:— "More gambling is dono in one day on. tho Stock Exchange' than in other directions. There is not a source ot industry or a worker in tho world that is not affected by tho gambling on the Stock Exchange.' This brutal gambling, this cornering and speculation, with no concern for human beings, is conducted by high "anil low Churchmen, and 1 religionists of all.sorts. They are all in It— gambling not in. stocks only, but in human lives, and then these very people say we must not have any recreation, that wo ought to abolish tho theatre and the nuisic-hu'lh I say wo ought to live above and beyond such cant. Then the Bishop said thjt drink was a curse. If wo had.better beer and wine we would have less 'drunkards; as for saying that hcor is tho causo of poverty, wo say that if every workman was a teetotaller, and was noblo and pure under the capitalistic system,there would still b'e poverty."
ARBITRATION COURT REPRESENTATIVE. RIVAL WORKERS'; CANDIDATES.. / Invercarglll, October 21. The Typographical Union unanimously resolved to support tho candidature of Mr. Slater as workers' representative on tho Court of Arbitration. It was argued that there had been no reason advanced for displacing Mr. Slater,' whie the other candidate, Mr. M'Cullough, had takon a Government position under certain regulations, and infringed those regulations, which did not constitute a valid argument in favour of advancement to a more responsible position. The Butcher's Union also supports Mr Slater. A HOUSE .BURNED. Dunedin, October 21. A house and contents, the property'of Mr. 'Jolii'i" Wilson, farmer, of Lauder, was destroyed by lire last night. The house was insured for £400 and the furniture for £10!) in tho Victoria Office. The causa of the out- v break Is unknown*
