GOOD' BEGINNING. SOME OF COMPETITIONS: Our Manawatu correspondent, telegraphing concerning the forthcoming, metropolitan show atjJ'almerston, says it .will provide .a fine display of stock. "Tho ~classes," ;ho says, '.'are exceptionally comprehensive, and tho show will be essentially .metropolitan, inasmuch as every province in,, the North Island is represented in the entries, besides Nelson and Canterbury. < Tho Manawatu Kennel Club' is well supported with entries from all parts ,of tho Dominion..':. Cattle. : , .. :V ■ Tho, principal exhibitors'; of-,shorthorns are Messrs. A. M. Williams, of Mount Herbert Estate, and Dalziell Bros. : The Herefords are, numerically, .not so'strong; Mr.'M. A. Stuckoy's 'absence beiiig felt. ; The chief exhibitors are Messrs. G. F. Moore, G. Wheeler,'' E. Short,' C: A. J. Levott, and P.,Buchanan. The Aberdeen Angus class is weak, and the Ayrshire''class has also fallen off, probably owing to the absence of Mr. S; Staiiden' and Mr. Luxford,' two well-known breeders.' There, is a fair entry of carriage horscsj'aiid a 1 promise 1 of good quality. 'Weight carrying hacks will be of high quality.' There are three entries' in tho trotting stallion' class. The harness classes are filled'well. The colt and filly classes: in draughts are filled well for, the first time. . The ; aged sires are divided'into two classes, .comprising, on ordinary class and tho' best heavy draught.'' For the latter class "Mr. Ellis,' of Bulls, who suggested that this distinction should ,be made, gives a prize of'£7.'."Tho colt classes will be 'represented from studs 'of Messrs. J. D. Mitchell, W. With' thirty-two. entries^, On the second,day there.will be the judging.of cattle and sheep, and'also the. hunters' competition for lady riders (twenty-six competing), '. and . a steeplechase,, for which .thirty-' oiio .compote. .On People's Day' (Friday) a forty-guinea challenge cup and £45 in prizes will, be'-contested', in the ring, and, thoro will also be a cattlo parade and, other attractions.
