PROTECTING THE WEAK.

The Society for the Protection of Women and Children is to be congratulated on several things. It is to" be congratulated first of all on the excellent record of work done during the past year as disclosed at the annual meeting last evening; and it deserves felicitation, also, ah the splendid recognition given to its efforts'by the large and enthusiastic gathering at that meeting presided over by His • Excellency the Governor. ■; While all must regret the need that calls into existance a society of this nature for the protection of the- weak, all must equally experience satisfaction that the necessity, having arisen, it has called forth the practical and sympathetic response : which' lias produced such praiseworthy efforts. The task which the' Society has taken on itself is no light one, as the annual report 1 of its work shows, and the delicate nature of its investigations naturally calls for the exercise of great, tact and judgment. It could easily discount its well-meant efforts by an absence of! these qualities, and the fact that it has achieved so much while appearing so little before the public gaze isy perhaps, the highest tribute that could be given to the admirable manner in which it performs its duties. Another matter upon which the Society deserves congratulation is the excellence of the speeches which its annual meeting produced. The addresses of. the Revs. Sprott and Evans, and that of Dr. Truby King, affords much food for. reflection, and each in its way must accomplish, some good by directing attention to everyday problem's arid weaknesses'in the social system which are liable to be overlooked. Much good as the Wellington Society has done in the past, its amalgamation with the Southern' Society for the Promotion' of Health amongst Women and Children is certain to widen its field .of usefuland so place it still higher in esteem.
