WELLINGTON RACING , CLUB'S SPRING MEETING. CONCLUDING DAY. MYSTIFICATION WINS THE PEARCB ' ' HANDICAP. : ' Once again the weather was gloriously fine for the Trentham; races, and a large crowd was present to see the concluding day s events. , Tho grounds were.in splendid order, the track had considerably improved, and during tho afternoon the warm rays of the sun shone pleasantly on the gathering. The feature of the racing was the success of the Karanlu colours, the cerise jacket appearing on no less than three winners. Mystification was inclined to be neglected in tho Pearco Handicap, but Mr.. Hunter's horse won in convincing style. The son of Apromonfrwas not accepted for in the New Zealand Clip, as he was deemed to have no chance with Eloyation, but when Gooseman has him: well he is always hard to beat up to a mile and a half. Tho double, All Red and Mystification, paid £44 18s., and the totalisator, figures >ere satisfactory' ! in- ; comparison -with- last year's fixture. Backers of the successful double included two journalists, a lawyer who is also an M.H.R., two Chinamen, a detective, a leading jockey, and a syndicate' of eight ladies: ■■:■■•■ ~ ■ • Among the-visitors. were His Excellency the Governor, the Rt> Hon. the Premier, the Hons.Jas. C.• Jenkins, and tho;black • edit gave tbeSßulls horseman his first winnings-ride at-'thejmeeting. Hereward had , a gallop sin i the Handicap,, but heifinished.a -lorig'way in the rear. , ' ■■ ' ' ' St. Aiden may have'run.better bad he got away with Aborigine. Ho wasilcft three length's, which is a big handicap in a half mile race. iKoluß is very dirty at tho post, and got away last on .'Saturday. He"put'up a'splondid performance to get third, aftor having such-a bad run, and will who stick to him at;the C.J.C. meeting. St. Joe usually gets a bad start, but the reverse was the caso on Saturday, and ho led with Gawain for six furlongs. The final pinch settled him. Gazoley would have incurred a penalty for the New Zealand Cup had he won on Saturday. ■ . " Seaman ran well for six;furiongs. but failed to i stay it out. I must' confess the gelding has me in a quandary, for on Thursday ho appeared to me to be going better at the end of the Wainui Handicap than' he was at the ; start;- and on Saturday's run ho showed brilliancy and lacked staying power. Certain it is that on Trentbam form he has no show at Riccarton, and from what I can gather his owner is at present undecided whether to send him south or not. Douche was made a very strong favourite for , tho Pearco!Handicap, but she got a bad run' and was never prominent. Taratahi .might find her in a winning vein. Clanchattan.gavo another-sorry exhibition on Saturday, and it is very evident he is not at his best. SHIPPING THKEE Garvain seems to be staying bettor, and he may win a race atMasterton or Carterton. Moata showed much improved form on Saturday to what ho did on Thursday. Tho stato of tbo going can hardly be urged,as an excuse, so it must havo been tho shorter distance. . ■ " Flotilla was:brought to Trontham to win the Hutt Park Handicap, but tho Torpedo maro got away badly, and never looked , dangerous. As she is hardly ready just now, she can be relied upon to show improved form when tho season is more advanced. Intelligence ran well in this oyent, but she was not forward enough to keep the pace, going after, five furlongs. All Red is'a solid colt and-as game as u pebble, but one hundred yards from homi he was fairly and squarely beaten on Saturday, aiid no/one but Jenkins could havo ridden him to victory. • The Bulls horseman was not dealing with a dunce, but nevertheless ho completely outwitted Oliver, and treated the crowd to a feat of horsemanship the liko of which had not previously been seen at Trentham. Tho finish was a closo one, but the public felt confldont i that Jonkins's'judgment had not orred, and they were soon convinced by tho promptitude of Mr. Hartgill. . ...... The Stake is a much improved ,colt, but a most unlucky horse. Ho has. now run four seconds in tho past fortnight. Sandix ,was left a treat in the Hntt Park Handicap,: and as the race progressed tho distance between tho chestnut gelding , and the rest of the field was increased. Cutis expected Dβ Witte to perform better than he did on Saturday, but, on the other hand; Truthful surprised his connections by his good showing. Prism is/ too small, and appears to be outclassed in open company. The Trial Stakes was a moral for Kairoma. Blue- Bell well backed becauso sho 'had the services of Jenkins. Penates, though very big, ran well, and when Mr. colt is in something liko condition' he is sure to prove .speedy. ■ Formidable finished strongly, but tho field behind her was rough, and there was'not much merit in her second. , • Volodia was made-a hot favourite for tho RuahinoHack, but bad no chance with .Mar-, tyrium, who showed different form to what she exhibited on Thursday, and paid the good .dividend of £A. Hor wjn' was dently anticipated] by backers in. town, who considered her to*ha,vo been.;exceptionally well treated bythe.handicapper. ( Armamonto ran poofly, as did Noy, who is evidently feeling thoeffects-of much travelling and hard racing. Oblivion is not far from form, and looks a winner at Masterton. ' Gold Crest carried a lot of monoy in tho Nainai Handicap, but got tho worst 1 of'tho start, and,, though finishing' strongly, was not near the leaders. Ballarat' is not ready, and can/liavo-.no. chanco fn the Stewards' Handicap, but Martollo will most likoly bo first favourite for tho event named. Moriarty, though a good colt, was mooting something better. "Waihuku w>l3 outclassed, and Golden Gato is not at his best. . Toa Tulii was unlucky to bump against Martollo in tho Naiorai Handicap, for in tho ordinary course the Conqueror gelding would ■ win nino out of ton races of this description. Ho ran honestly, and is always worth-an investment in a five-furlong flutter, provided tho woight is not prohibitive • ' Strathcona proved [that his win on Thursday was no nuko, for thoro wore a lot of good ones that finished bohind him on Saturday. . •■' . . ■ Toa Tuhi is not a likely startor in the Stewards' Handicap.
